HeartSick by Chelsea Cain (2007)

Started: 2/10/2008
Ended: 2/27/2008
Synopsis:
Archie Sheridan spent ten years tracking serial killer Gretchen Lowell, but in the end she was the one who kidnapped Archie and tortured him for ten days. Instead of killing him, she mysteriously decided to let him go and turn herself in. Now Gretchen has been locked away, while Archie is in a prison of another kind, addicted to pain pills, powerless to get those ten horrific days off his mind. He continues to visit Gretchen in prison once a week, saying that only he can get her to confess as to the whereabouts of more of her victims; but even he knows the truth: he can't stay away.
When another killer begins snatching teenage girls off the streets of Portland, Archie has to pull himself together enough to lead the new task force investigating the murders. A hungry young newspaper reporter, Susan Ward, begins profiling Archie and the investigation, which sparks a deadly game between Archie, Susan, the new killer, and even Gretchen. They need to catch a killer, and maybe somehow then Archie can free himself from Gretchen, once and for all.

Later Archie visits Gretchen in prison and learns that she actually had a hand in Reston's killing spree, including the assignment of Susan Ward to profile him. It is revealed that Reston was present and had actually assisted Gretchen when she abducted Archie years back. Archie vows that he will never come visit her again. The book ends with Archie reconciling with his ex-wife and Susan pursuing the Molly Palmer/Senator sex scandal story. It turns out that Molly has decided to talk with Susan about the incident.

My Review: Heartsick features an entwined pair of characters that are memorably drawn in serial killer Gretchen Lowell and police detective Archie Sheridan, who returns to the force after a two year medical absence. HeartSick is tough gritty storytelling with a wonderfully detailed backdrop of Portland, Oregon contributing to what looks to be a new promising series. Every so often, a chapter is inserted that takes us back two years to the ten days that Gretchen held Archie. These chapters are without question the strongest chapters in the book, in large part to Gretchen's unspeakable cruelty and graphic detail of Archie's prolonged torture. What Ms. Cain is going to do for a follow-up and how she'll keep these two compelling characters entwined together should be interesting.
Book Score:8.5/10
