After Dark Horrorfest 2007 Starts Today!

HORRORFEST explodes into theaters today (November 9th - 18th, 2007) with another 8 films to die for. Started in 2006 by After Dark Films as an annual celebration of the horror genre, this year's Horrorfest features a wide spectrum of films guaranteed to make your skin crawl. Here is the list of this year's movies. Some of them look promising and I really enjoyed the majority of last year's selection. I will give reviews of all eight movies as I see them.

THE DEATHS OF IAN STONE

My Review: First off I have to make the point that the "official book synopsis" above is false and misleading on several counts:
1. What local politicians were trying to sabotage Scarpetta? I would not consider Dr. Self, Shandy or even Lucious as politicians, and nobody else was mentioned nor alluded to??
2. "A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower"? No water tower and the only person jumping was Gianni Lupano from his penthouse apartment. Gianni was a tennis coach and no mention of his family and whether they were well-known was mentioned??
3."A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home"? Lydia Webster was not found in her beach house, but several miles away in a desolate area in Hilton Head. Her body ravaged by maggots, crabs and birds.

I think this synopsis better fits the actual story you get:
Soon after relocating to Charleston, S.C., to launch a private forensics lab, Scarpetta is asked to consult on the murder of U.S. tennis star Drew Martin, whose mutilated body was found in Rome. Contradictory evidence leaves Scarpetta, the Italian carabinieri and Scarpetta's lover, forensic psychologist Benton Wesley, stumped. But when she discovers unsettling connections between Martin's murder, the body of an unidentified South Carolina boy and her old nemesis, the maniacal psychiatrist Dr. Marilyn Self, Scarpetta encounters a killer as deadly as any she's ever faced.

OK-now to my review. I really wanted to like this book but Patricia Cornwell continues her downhill slide in this latest Kay Scarpetta novel. All the characters I have grown to care about in the earlier books - Scarpetta, Benton, Marino, Rose and Lucy - continue to revel in anger, jealousy, pettiness, and self-loathing. The writing is turgid and repetitive, the conversations between characters is often sophomoric, and the third person narrative only serves to push the characters away. I miss the style and feelings evoked by the earlier books of this series. I miss the scenes with Scarpetta cooking. I miss the atmosphere of her elegant and vast mansion, now crammed into a tiny two story cottage house. Yes, I will continue to read any future installments, but only with the hope that Ms. Cornwell will return to her former glory

Y'All... Britney Spears new album, Blackout, drops
today with many wondering how bad it will actually be. Let me say, I had personally given up on the white trash, washed-up punchline that Brit Brit has become. Yet I was drawn to listen to her new album like it was some horrific car accident I was passing on the highway and could not help but slow down and crane my neck to catch a glimpse.

And let me be the first to tell you, Blackout just might be Britney's best album yet! Even though her personal life is a joke and she seriously needs to rethink all her "friends", the electro-pop dancefest that is Blackout, is amazing and addictive. Maybe she hasn't completely lost it (just her children).

DVD Release - Twin Peaks-The Definitive Gold Box Edition

Yeah Baby!! Finally David Lynch has released Twin Peaks, the entire series. This collection is promised to hold some bad-ass extras! Twin Peaks starts off as a basic murder mystery, but rapidly becomes something a lot stranger, eerie and even more frightening. It becomes a bit weaker during the second season -- especially when Laura's killer is revealed prematurely -- but it's still strange and darkly humorous right up to the flawed cliffhanger ending. Unfortunately Fire Walk With Me, the theatrical prequel to the series is not found here, probably because of rights issues. Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)

Movie Synopsis:
Sarah Wolfe (Ali Larter) was the only living survivor from the massacre at the Vanacutt Mansion, but no one believed her claims that ghosts were responsible for the gruesome murders that took place there. Now her recent and questionable suicide leaves her sister, Ariel, no choice but to devote herself to finding out who - or what - was responsible for her death. Ariel (Amanda Righetti) discovers that Sarah sent her the diary of the sadistic Dr. Vanacutt just before she died, offering clues to the diabolical evil that resides within the house. But the diary also makes Ariel a target in a deadly treasure hunt that leads a group of unwitting victims back to the Vanacutt Mansion, reawakening the terror imprisoned within the house on the hill. This time, the house and the evil spirits inside are out to make sure that no one leaves alive.

My Review: Honestly, I kind of dug this movie. OK it was a b-movie and by no means as good as the first installment: House on Haunted Hill (1999). But I enjoyed the creepiness of the setting as I have always been intrigued with the concept of the haunted hospital/asylum. The ghosts and death scenes were well done ( for straight to DVD) and this film dives more into the history of the house and gives us more insight into why and how the house is the way it is. Sure, there are several plot holes (i.e there were two survivors from the first movie), but does one really watch horror movies for plot direction and award-winning acting? Fuck No! We watch to see gore and violence. We watch to be scared if not amused by repetitive cliches. We watch to see stupid motherfuckers get cut the fuck up. Anyway, I enjoyed this short movie (clocking in about 1hr and 20 mins) and really enjoyed seeing Amanda Righetti (OC, North Shore & Reunion) again. Why is this girl not working more?

SAW IV Kills at the Box Office

Saw IV came in at #1 at the box office this past weekend. It brought in $32 million, down from Saw III's $33 million opening weekend gross last year. I have yet to see it, but I will review it here later this week.

SAW IV Hits Theaters Today

It's almost Halloween, which means it's time for another installment of the hugely successful Saw films. Last seen, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) and his apprentice Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are dead. Upon the news of Detective Kerry (Dina Meyer)'s murder, two seasoned FBI profilers, Agent Strahm (Scott Patterson) and Agent Perez (Athena Karkanis), arrive at the depleted police precinct and help veteran Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) sift through Jigsaw's latest grisly game of victims and piece together the puzzle. However, when SWAT Commander Rigg (Lyriq Bent), the last officer untouched by Jigsaw, is suddenly abducted and thrust into the madman's harrowing game, the officer has but ninety minutes to overcome a series of interconnected traps,or face the deadly consequences. Rigg's citywide pursuit leaves a wake of dead bodies, and Detective Hoffman and the FBI uncover long hidden clues that lead them back to Jigsaw's ex-wife Jill (Betsy Russell). The genesis of Jigsaw's evil is unveiled, exposing the puppet master's true intentions and the sinister plan for his past, present and future victims.

I'm betting this movie will be big this year(again!) and take the #1 spot at the box office. Just how big is anybody's guess.

Joker's Pumpkin

According to JoBlo.com, you can check on over to the Joker's "unofficial" website, a pumpkin carved with Batman's symbol had appeared, complete with spooky flickering candle. Lately the candle has burned away to a mere nub, and the madman's gourd appears to be rotting. Curiously, the deterioration only seems to be affecting one side of the pumpkin's face, a possible allusion to another Bat-villain.The slow decay and melting wax seems to indicate a countdown to some potential event occurring on Halloween, but we'll have to wait almost a week to find out if that's the case.

Gossip Girl - My Newest Guilty Pleasure

I hate to admit this, but my newest guilty pleasure is watching that trashy Gossip Girl on the CW network. A cross between Cruel Intentions and Heathers, this show is soooo bad, it's good! The plot lines and dialogue are ridiculous and yet I'm drawn to watch obsessively week after week. How in the hell do 14-16 year olds get into NYC bars and order drinks? This never happened on 90210. Of course that bitch Brenda would have been much more tolerable if she had a few cocktails, but I digress. Back to Gossip Girl... very attractive cast (except Chuck and the new girl, Vanessa) and a great shooting location has got me hooked. I keep waiting to glimpse Carrie and Co. to strut around the corner. But where are the gays? It's fucking NYC. Bottom line, I'm addicted like a crack whore. What can I say, I'm shameless and superficial.

You've probably heard by now that Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling outed her character Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore during a question-and-answer session at Carnegie Hall Friday night in response to a question from a 19-year-old fan. He asked, "Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself?"
Rowling replied, to the reported shock and delight of the audience there: "My truthful answer to you...I always thought of Dumbledore as gay...Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald [a bad wizard he defeated long ago], and that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent, but he met someone as brilliant as he was and, rather like Bellatrix, he was very drawn to this brilliant person and horribly, terribly let down by him...Yeah, that's how I always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying, 'I knew a girl once, whose hair...' I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!"
The revelation had fans looking for new meaning in some of the passages.

Large and purple with short arms and legs, he is known for his monotonous face and slow-witted demeanor. His most common expression is the word "duh". Originally Grimace was the "Evil Grimace", with two pairs of arms with which to steal milkshakes. After that first campaign, the character was revised to be one of the "good guys", and his number of arms was reduced by two. His love of milkshakes was retained. Commercials and merchandise generally portrayed him as a well-meaning simpleton, whose clumsy antics provided a comic foil to Ronald McDonald. The character was retained after the streamlining of the characters in the '80s, but was dropped in 2007.

The Horror Genre is NOT Dead!

30 Days of Night killed at the box office this weekend, coming in at #1 with 16 million.

With Halloween around the corner and the upcoming Saw IV due out, the Horror genre is definitely not dead. A look back at some recent horror film releases and the buckets of cash they brought in says it all: "We're not done scaring the shit out of you!"
