In a wilderness gorge deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, the worst of the natural and supernatural worlds collide.

The blast opens an underground cavern, exposing a long-buried subterranean species to the surface world.

My Review: This was my first Scott Nicholson book and probably my last. When I read the back of the book, I was hoping for some of The Descent -style of fun, featuring monsters/ freaks of nature hidden from the world discovered at long last. But NO-that is not what you get here. You get vampires, which is not that bad-but Nicholson just did not make the story scary, in fact not even creepy or foreboding. The vampires were often downplayed and really had little action on the overall story. The characters (and I mean every single fucking one of them) were annoying and I was hoping they would have been killed off earlier in the book to just shut them up (the first actual death scene is not until page 200 and believe me-it was not all that). I actually almost stopped reading this book but picked it up again in anticipation it would rock and make-up for the shitty first half. But sadly it did not. I actually resorted to skimming the last 10 chapters. For some reason I had it set in my mind to finish this fucker. This book was a complete waste of time and I would not recommend to my fellow readers. I should have never picked it back up!I actually have a few other unread Scott Nicholson books I had acquired but after reading comments on Amazon where people were saying this was Nicholson's best work yet- I think it's time to take these potential stink-bombs in to Half-Price Books and trade up for something more interesting. I'm just not hungry for anything more by Scott Nicholson!

"27 Dresses" Premiere

Katherine Heigl looked radiant at last night's L.A. premiere of her new movie-27 Dresses. Grey's Anatomy co-stars TR Knight and Ellen Pompeo stopped by to support their friend.

27 Dresses is about a young woman (Katherine Heigl) who has been a bridesmaid 27 times and hasn’t married yet. She’s secretly in love with a man who meets and falls in love with her sister. Her sister ends up getting engaged with the man and then asks Heigl to be her bridesmaid.

Solstice (2008)

Synopsis: Before going off to college, Megan (Elisabeth Harnois-Why is she not listed on the cover of this DVD? She is the lead of the movie) and her friends take one last summer trip to the bayou, despite the recent suicide of Megan's twin, Sophie. Soon, Megan feels Sophie's presence, and as the friends try to conjure up her spirit, the horror begins. Shawn Ashmore, Tyler Hoechlin, Amanda Seyfried, Matt O'Leary and Hilarie Burton also star in this thriller directed by Daniel Myrick (The Blair Witch Project).
My Review: I was expecting a real stinker-but ended up with a surprisingly good movie. Direct-to -DVD, the story is your typical ghost story (girl dies and comes back to haunt) with a twist at the end that may or may not get you. That said it never gets cheesy or campy. However the directing, editing and cinematography are really good and make up for the slow pace of the movie. Shot in the Louisiana swamps-the movie looks very beautiful. I loved the opening title sequence and really dug the soundtrack. I even liked the song that was played during the closing titles. Also I really enjoyed the acting. I thought the main girl (Elisabeth Harnois) did a great job (and she did double duty by playing twins!).
The Bad: I would have enjoyed seeing some better looking guys since the twinks they had were shirtless in several scenes (Matt-some people should stay covered up!), no major scares, profanity was at a low and gore was non-existent. I expect gore and blood in a horror movie-but I guess this was more of a thriller. Like I said-I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised. Solstice is no Blair Witch, but I was entertained and I would definitely recommend a viewing.

'Bond 22' Starts Shooting

Britney: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

According to US Magazine:

"After Britney Spears defied court-mandated visitation hours Thursday night by refusing to turn over her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline, police were called to her home and later a reportedly intoxicated Britney Spears was taken via ambulance to L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
As of 3:45 a.m PST Friday, Spears remained in the hospital under observation.

A hospital source tells Usmagazine.com that Spears has been designated a "special needs" patient, meaning "they have either overdosed or tried to commit suicide. So we go stay with these patients and monitor them constantly. We watch them so they don't hurt themselves and watch the people who come visit them to make sure they don't pass anything to them."

Us has learned that the pop star was due to turn over Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, Thursday at 7 p.m. Federline's bodyguard was supposed to pick them up, but Spears was defiant. She had been with the kids at her Beverly Hills home since noon Thursday, after being briefly deposed earlier in her ongoing custody dispute.

About ninety minutes after refusing to give up the kids, police arrived.

"There have been police sent to that residence," an LAPD officer told Us. "We don't know any more at this time, but apparently they've arrived."

Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, was seen leaving Spears' home around 9 p.m.

Spears' attorney, Sorrell Trope, who on Wednesday asked the court for permission to be relieved from his duties of representing Spears, tells Us, "In a normal case when someone shows up with a certified court order saying the kids need to be somewhere else, the police see to it that the order is obeyed. But that is in a normal case."

Spears had shown up for a custody deposition Thursday afternoon (after skipping two depositions in the past month) but left after about 45 minutes.

"She was cooperative," Kaplan said. "There has been no change in anything. It will be continued to another date, which I will not say at this time."

On Wednesday, Trope sought permission from the court to end his representation of the singer.
A source told Usmagazine.com. "[Trope's firm] couldn’t rein her in. No one can, and it's an embarrassment in front of the judge."

Spears, 26, lost shared custody of her sons in October.

10:50 p.m.: The fire department arrives on the scene. LAPD Officer Jason Lee tells Us, "The officers are still there. They are trying to resolve this peacefully and legally, according to the court order. They've been there since 8 p.m. and it is in regards to Britney Spears’ custody battle."
11:05 p.m.: Paramedics take a gurney and a backboard into Spears' home.
11:25 p.m.: An ambulance pulls into Spears' driveway, parking behind her car.
11:50 p.m.: An ambulance carrying Spears and other emergency vehicles leave the scene; it's reported that Sean Preston and Jayden James are in Federline's custody.
12:40 a.m.: Spears arrives via ambulance at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Police had erected screens to shield her from waiting photographers; Federline and Spears pal Sam Lutfi soon arrive separately. Around time of mom's arrival, son Jayden carried into the emergency room by police officer while sucking on a pacifier.
1:10 a.m.: Jamie Spears, Britney's father, arrives at Cedars Sinai.
3:45 a.m.: Cedars source confirms that Spears remains under observation as a "special needs" patient".

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)

My Review: I had my reservations for this film, especially after the crap fest that was Resident Evil: Apocalypse back in 2004. But I really dig zombie flicks and I'm a sucker for a hot chick movie lead that kicks ass, so of course I did get excited when I popped this baby into the DVD player. Extinction is a big improvement but far from perfect or even what a Resident Evil movie should be. Low on story/character development but high on striking visuals and butt whooping in all of it's forms, Extinction managed to drag the series back out of the trashcan. The basic plot of Extinction is as follows:

T-Virus escapes, contaminates world, world becomes desert. Most living creatures become zombies who prefer human meat on the menu. Some humans survive - good guys (Ali Larter, Oded Fehr, Ashanti) form convoys and keep moving, bad guys live underground in high-tech facilities. Good guys look for more good guys and scavenge for supplies, and of course kill zombies. Bad guys look for cure and kill clones and zombies. Evil scientist (Dr. Sam Isaacs) gets carried away with evil experiments and needs Milla Jovovich (Alice) to use her blood to make anti-virus. Alice wants to keep her blood, and links up with human convoy. Many deaths follow. Ending leaves huge opening for next movie, possibly in Tokyo.

The CGI for Resident Evil has once again improved on itself; Everything blends in seamlessly with the real-world environment and the stunts are much more grounded with reality. The kukhri knives are probably the coolest and deadliest weapon used in the film, and the actual sequences their featured in are amazing. I really dug the zombie crows scene especially when Ashanti's meaningless role ended. What the hell was the point in having her in the movie except to appeal to a certain demographic?

Plot holes were abound as well (where is Jill Valentine? what happened to her from RE2?) and so were a string of tired clichés that I could have done without. If I see the whole “I got bitten by a Zombie but won’t tell anyone until I turn and attack them” device one more time...Aghh!!

All in all, Resident Evil: Extinction was a better film than I anticipated and being the highest grossing installment in the series, I expect we will have yet another zombie flick on the horizon.
