With much sadness, I have learned that Estelle Getty has passed away today at the golden age of 84. Getty was best known of her portrayal as Sophia Petrillo on the popular 1980s sitcom, The Golden Girls. In it, she played the wise-cracking old Sicilian mother of Dorothy Zbornak, who was the show's main protagonist, played by Bea Arthur. Getty was actually one year younger than Arthur. Getty was a an Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning actress and will be sorely missed. Thanks "Ma" for being a Friend!
